Travelling With Your Pet Under the Pet Travel Scheme

Having a travelling companion is important to most people. The travelling companion keeps us company when we are in a different country and give us someone to talk to that understands and listens to us while on the long trip. For most people, this travelling companion is short, furry, and adorable. It is our pets that make the best travelling partners. However, taking our pets into other countries can be very difficult. Entry into most countries with pets means a six month quarantine unless you meet certain criteria. This criteria is called the Pet Travel Scheme.

According to the Travel Pet Scheme, there are certain things that you must do if you are entering or re-entering the UK from a PETS qualified country, like the United States of America, or Belgium. This criteria is designed to make it easier for you and your pet to travel to different countries without being quarantined for six months, or longer. One of the main things that you must do at least six months in advance before leaving the UK or departing to enter the UK is to have you pet fitted with a microchip. Microchips server multiple purposes. One of the main reasons for a microchip is to be able to better find your dog if lost. However, the microchip also holds pertinent information, such as medical records and allergies. This information will be provided by a vet.

Another thing that must be done in order to enter the UK with a pet is to ensure that their rabies vaccinations are up to date and a blood test performed to make sure that the vaccination will provide adequate protection from rabies. You must also have a veterinarian that is Government authorized to provide you with an official certificate from PETS stating that these guidelines are being followed. It is also important to sign a residency declaration form that states clearly that you, nor your pet, had entered a country that is not PETS qualified within the six months previous to your return to the UK. Also, before entering the UK, it is necessary to have your pet treated for ticks and tapeworms within twenty-four to forty-eight hours prior.

While it does seem like a lot of trouble to perform just to enter the UK, or any other PETS qualified country, with your furry little travelling companion, it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Once you have entered the UK, however, you can travel between the British Isles without having to worry about the PETS criteria again. However, to enter Belgium or Holland, it is recommended to have a health certificate signed by a veterinarian at least twenty-four hours before departure. Also, in able to enter Belgium, you must have your pet vaccinated with an EXP26 rabies vaccine.

While adhering to the PETS criteria, there are still other international issues with travelling with your pet in tow. The main issue is that most large transit organizations, such as airlines and train companies, prohibit pets on board. Also, keep in mind that some breeds of dogs are illegal to posses in the UK, regardless of whether or not you meet the criteria. The Pet Travelling Scheme has been put in place to ensure that your pets, and your neighbours, are safe.
